Latest best versions are still 2.05/2.09/2.10.

2.10??? What's new in it compared to 2.05/2.09?

2.10 was designed for the Graph 35+E and fx-9750GII.
Compared to previous versions targetting these models, it adds the spreadsheet app.

Hello, I am quite new to upgrading calculators and to this forum, having only worked with more vintage calculators before. For these, re-soldering is more common than firmware re-programming.
I have just bought an fx9860G slim, and found that it was possible to upgrade to OS 2.04, today there is OS 01.10.001. I have read the instruction steps A-E at the top many times, and do not understand how to link them to the preceding list where I can download a .bin file for fx9860GII/ graph 75-95 2.04 SH3. There is also a link to a patch where I can download an .ips file, and there is a program called winips.exe.
I do not understand at all how these files and the winips-program are used to upgrade the calculator, and how these files are linked to each other, and how to apply the instruction step A-E. I do not even understand what is meant by a patch in this context.
I understand that an explanation might be lengthy to make me understand; does anyone know if there is anywhere on the forum where I can find some basic information to help med forward? I am grateful for any kind of help, wanting to learn more about this.
Best regards Jonas Sandstedt

Hello.

OS versions 2.01+ were only released for the fx-9860G, fx-9750GII and fx-9860GII, not for the fx-9860G Slim.
Which means these OS versions won't work properly if directly installed on the fx-9860G Slim, because the keypad is different among other reasons.

So, to make these versions work on the fx-9860G Slim, you need to patch them. That's what the .ips file is for, it contains the modifications to apply to a specific OS version, and can be used with the winips.exe tool for example.

Hello,

Thank you, that was a first breakthrough.
I have now patched the 2.04 bin file with the slim patch and acquired the bin file "fx9860g(sh3)2.04_to_fx9860gslim.bin". The next questions is what do I do with this file? I still do not understand how to apply the instruction steps A-E, or if there is anything else I should do.

This how-to hasn't been completely taylored for the fx-9860G Slim, that's all.

Step A is about getting the OS image. For an fx-9860G Slim, you need the SH3 edition of OS 2.04 :
https://bible.planet-casio.com/casio/os ... s/2.04.bin

Step B is about patching the OS image. I think you already did it with winips.

Steps C+ should be ok.

Hello, thanks very much for the reply. I still do not really get it, however.
Isn’t the bin file for fx9860GII/ graph 75-95 2.04 SH3, called 2.04.bin, that I downloaded from the top of this thread and patched yesterday the same bin file as the SH3 edition of OS 2.04 you refer to in the enclosed link? I thought that the patching converted the 2.04.bin file to the file “fx9860g(sh3)2.04_to_fx9860gslim.bin” that should fit the Slim and that I now already have a file that somehow should be installed into the calculator? Or is the SH3 edition of OS 2.04 you mention something more that I need?
Furthermore, in step C) I am urged to find a Boot Code. I can get the Diagnostic Mode popup as described by pressing OPTN+EXP+AC. If I follow the described procedure I press F1 and then 9. However, after having pressed F1 the popup says “Delete all data?” YES: [9] No: [EXIT]. Should I press 9 here anyway – what is meant by “Delete all data”?
Also, I read that a certain USB driver is needed as a complement to the program FA-124 that I installed from the link at step P3). It says in the text that installing the FA-124 linking software is going to install the calculator drivers too. Does this mean that the required USB driver somehow is integrated into the software?
I hope for some more guidance.
Best regards Jonas

You don't need to check the boot code :
  • fxRemote2M4M if you are attempting to upgrade a fx-7400GII / Graph 25+Pro calculator
  • if not, fxRemoteE205 if your have an SH4 calculator with Boot Code 2011.0531.1709
  • for all other cases, the original fxRemote

You aren't upgrading an fx-7400GII / Graph 25+Pro calculator, you don't have an SH4 calculator, so you just use the original fxRemote.exe file.

Thanks again, I think I am getting closer. I have now downloaded fxRemote.exe, original 2.0.3.26 version, and as mentioned previously I have the patched file “fx9860g(sh3)2.04_to_fx9860gslim.bin”. I guess the latter is my OS upgrade image for the Slim calculator.
As I understand the procedure, the next step is D, and then follows E, using the fxRemote program and the patched file “fx9860g(sh3)2.04_to_fx9860gslim.bin”. Is that correct?
Now comes some important questions, when do I connect the calculator to the PC, and do I need any special USB driver? Was that included in the FA-124 linking software?
Best regards Jonas

I thought it might be good to share my recent experience doing these upgrades to make it easier for others. Some of the info is not quite right or is out of date. First off the 2.04 image listed for the fx-9860g slim is the same as the 2.04 for the fx9750gii so it won't work. The slim has different keyboard mappings. See the info above this post where a valid slim image is provided along with all kinds of good information. That sure made it easy for me to upgrade my slims. I did follow the polyos process and got the 4M images for fx-9750gii's using a command line from a cmd window. Next, for SH3 calcs including the slim, it isn't necessary to put them in OSerror mode. fxrecovery will do that for you and just has a popup to confirm it is in OSerror at some point. There is a warning popup about the image mismatch with the calculator, so you just ok the continuation of the process. For SH4s (I didn't do any of the special date code ones) you can start the recovery and then after a bit it will prompt to do the key codes to get it into OSerror. The codes given by the program popup are correct - you don't hold reset down from the start as stated on the pages here. When you are done, don't forget that the setup may have Lineio selected instead of Mathio for SH4. Regarding drivers from FA-124, you don't have to do anything. Installing FA-124 will give you the drivers for your calculator usb to usb cable that fxrecovery uses. You don't need FA-124 invoked.
If you want to use FA-124 or fxrecovery with old 3-pin serial on Win10 or any new computer which would not have serial ports, then you can get a usb to ttl converter on ebay and connect it to a 2.5mm stereo cable. Note that there are USB to ttl and USB to RS232 UART cables around that use either FTDI or CP2101 chips usually. You need to put in the drivers for those. I had one that popped up as a CP2102 under the Other line in the Device Driver window, so I searched out CP2102 and found the drivers at the Silicon Labs site and put them in and it was working, although it was to RS232 levels not TTL. Note that RS232 is -12v to +12v originally but later uses reduce the voltage. My cable was -6v to 6v. These won't work however since the calculators need TTL style levels of 0 to +5 v (or later ones which probably use 3.3v chips need 0 to +3v). The calculators seem to be tolerant of extra voltage and negative voltages without damage, but the sense of the bits is opposite for RS232 vs TTL so you need adapt to TTL levels or get a converter that does TTL output directly.
