Ti Nspire CX (R revision) screen broken + misc

Hi,

So I have a TI Nspire CX, a P-0814R, and the screen is broken.

I had tried to buy a replacement screen from Taobao as recommended by critor (https://world.taobao.com/item/19576473009.htm) but the seller is not responding after a couple of days. As such, I'm trying to find parts in second hand stores near me.

Most of them are only selling AB models. Is it possible to swap the screen from an R revision to an AB revision?

Additionally, is it possible to upgrade to CAS software with the R revision?

Thanks.

(for personal reference: revisions A-V have been assembled up to 2015
revision W : 2015-2016
revision AB : 2017-2018)

Hi.

If I remember well, revisions A-V and revisions W+ screens are physically incompatible. You won't be able to connect a revisions W+ screen on an revision A-V PCB.

If the seller doesn't reply in English, you can try using an agent for your purchase :

...
But it may be more expensive.

I see, thanks for the insight!

How about the CAS software upgrade though?

Sounds cool.

Unrelated but since you sound like a TI god, what's the difference between CX v1 and CX II? And can third party programs (ie nDless) run on CX II?

Hi,
basically the CX II came in 2019 with a significantly faster processor (Ti claimed at that time about 2,5X faster than one of the CX).
I do not know exactly if this metric is fully correct, but there are some Youtube comparisons of both models side-by-side showing a significantly better response of the CX-II for all operations (booting, calculation speed, graphing speed, ...).

There are some small changes in the hardware, but all these are now correctly considered by Ndless, so Yes, you can have Ndless based third party program on the CX-II, even if the coding community is much less active than one of the Ti84 by instance. Note that in most of the case, old Ndless programs must be recompiled with newer versions to accommodate new hardware specificities, unless the programmer came with a newer version of the program that correctly check the CX/CX-II specificities.

If the underlying question is : does it worth changing your broken CX for a brand new CX-II, I guess the answer is definitely yes.

Hope it helps

BR

Thanks for the reply!

Based on your experience, is there extensive cross-compatibility of third party programs that was made for CX v1 to work on CX ii with minimal effort needed to get it work?

Hi
from my experience, "classical" programs such as games or editors that do not use too deep hardware related stuffs are generally well compatible between the models (CX and CX II).
For advanced programs, such as rom dumper or reader, that are very dependent of the considered hardware, this is very risky to use them. But in general, they will just not work as the programmers are using some safegards to protect against some misuses.

If you plan to play nQuake or stuff like that, it should work as the most classical programs have been already rewritten or recompiled with new Ndless versions able to handle CX II hardware.

It is important to know that upgrading to a new rom (firmware update), aside disabling the possibility to install Ndless until appearance of an exploit, may need to have some recompilation of some programs due to some changes in Ndless to make it compatible with the new firmware.

Thanks for the reply!

In the meantime, the Taobao seller finally responded but it seems that he's trying to ask for payment to ship overseas and claims to be contacting the warehouse to withhold payment. Is this normal?

How was the normal process like for everyone else?

Using a professional agent, as mentioned above. Usually 2 payments :
  • 1st payment, they buy the item for you
  • 2nd payment, they ship it to you
