My friend's calculator will not acknowledge if it is connected to other handhelds or to a computer, which makes it impossible to get out of Press-to-test mode. I can get my handheld out of this mode, so I know how to do it. Hers is simply having issues. Is there a way to fix this, or to get it out of press-to-test without connecting it to something else?

If the handheld doesn't notice it is connected to anything, there might be a hardware problem.
For now, let's attempt to eliminate software causes. What OS version is that particular calculator running ? Depending on the version, the procedure to obtain the OS version is triggered by HOME 8 4 (e.g. in OS 1.1), HOME 8 5 (e.g. in OS 1.7) or HOME 5 4 (from OS 3.x). The reason I'm asking is that pressing the reset button on the back, into the hole, erases all user documents on old OS versions (IIRC, on OS 1.*), so I wouldn't want your friend to lose documents :)
