* * * STAR TREK * * * THE ORIGINAL SIMULATION --- STRATEGY GUIDE --- This file will spoil the learning curve and enjoyment of the game, so I recommend you only read this after you have had a go at playing solo. The following tips will should be used to improve your chances of winning the game, it is not foolproof, you can still lose because luck also plays a part of winning and you cannot control that: 1. print the TREKHELP.txt instructions to help you learn the game, before you read any more tips. 2. Always raise Shields prior to entering a hostile Quadrant. Approximately 400 units per enemy should be maintained. 3. Use minimum warp to achieve movement around the Galaxy ie. Do not travel back and forth across the galaxy or you will run out of time. Work out a plan whereby you can cover the galaxy in the least distance. Depending on where you start, working around the outside and finishing in the middle seems to work well. Having said that, you should follow the enemy at the same time. 4. If you lose your Long Range Sensors or Warp Engines you can pass through 4 Quadrants in a very short distance if you use the corners of the Quadrant ie. If you are in Sector 1,1 and navigate Course 5, Warp 0.2 you will be in the next quadrant sector 1,8. You can then navigate on Course 3, Warp 0.2, then Course 1, Warp 0.2 and you have covered 4 quadrants. This has the advantage of minimising time wasted. 5. When attacking the enemy it is best to try and navigate to the centre of the quadrant to give maximum coverage. If you are in the corners, Torpedoes may be blocked by stars and Phasers may will be less effective if the enemy is on the opposite corner. 6. Try to remember where Starbases are in a Quadrant for when you return, normally they will be in the same location. 7. Do not return to a Starbase for repairs if it is not necessary. If you only have minor damage, just continue navigating toward your next task. Of course this will partially depend on what is damaged. 8. Always perform Long Range Scans before fighting the enemy, in case your Long Range Sensors are damaged. 9. Try and remember what is in a Quadrant, or plan an emergency exit course in case your Short Range Sensors are damages. 10. If your Short Range Sensors are damaged your best option is to fire a Torpedo to check if a path is clear. There is an element of risk that your torpedo will be deflected back at you, but this is better than flying straight into a star. If you have no Torpedo's your best option is to move back and forth the minimum distance of 0.2 and hopefully you will eventually be repaired. This could take a very long time though. If there are enemy in the Quadrant you should fight them first, your Targeting Computer will still give you directions if it is not damaged. If you are near the edge of the quadrant escaping by warping away from the centre is the best option. 11. Almost always use Torpedos in preference to Phasers, because if you hit the enemy they will always die. 12. Do not leave a quadrant with enemy then return later, because all their 200 units of energy will be restored. Leave only if you cannot beat them. Remember they will shoot at you as you leave the quadrant. 13. If you are running out of time and Torpedos, use Phasers to finish off the last couple of Klingons. 14. Never guess a direction to fire a torpedo, your Targeting Computer is very accurate. 15. Never fire a Torpedo into a star on purpose, especially when it is near to you. 16. Use Phasers on the enemy when stars are in the way. 17. Never shoot your last Starbase, you will face court-martial. 18. Try to navigate to a quadrant that will allow you to get the maximum number of Long Range Scans ie. If you start in Quadrant 2,2 and make a Long Range Scan, then navigate on Course 1, Warp 3 and perform another Long Range Scan you will have information on 18 out of the 64 quadrants after just one move. 19. The average number of Enemy in any game is 17, the average number of Starbases is 3. This is not to say you won't get 30 enemy and 1 starbase. If you think you are being hard done by, then you are not fit to command a starship. 20. Kill the Klingons that are closest to you first to minimise damage to the Enterprise from their return fire..
