Introduction ------------ The king of fighters 2000 (which will be referred to as "Kof2k" throughout the rest of this document) is an advanced fighting game for the TI-83, TI-83+, and TI-83+ Silver Edition calculators. Kof2k has been in development for just over 2 years - a long time for any program (especially a calculator program). The project was originally started by Andy Poes but he lost interest due to some limitations in his implementation and gave the project to me. Included in this zip file are some screen shots of the older iterations of kof2k. It is interesting to see how it has progressed over time, from just a single moving sprite to a full-fledged fighting game. This game has been a part of my life for a long time and I have great pride in it. I can only hope that you have as much fun playing it as I did making it. There is an intro movie(named kofprev.8xp/.83p) included in this zip file. Installation ------------ This game is large. There is no doubt about it, you need lots of memory to play this game. This should be of no problem to Silver Edition users but the 83 version has some limitations due to the smaller memory. The main program is about 20k, and if you want to install all of the character files(13) you'll need about 12k free. Each of the character files is about 1k and they can be stored in ROM(they are loaded using ionDetect). Kof2k will run in any Ion compatible shell (or should at least). I have tested it on Plasma, Ion, and MirageOS. To install, send the main program (KOF2k.8xp/83p) and the characters that you want to use (listed below). Choose the correct format for your calculator (83: .83p, 83+ or 83+SE: .8xp) A of characters follows: Don.8xp/.83p - Donatello of the Ninja Turtles created by Nick Haigler Clippy.8xp/.83p - The paper clip from Microsoft Office created by Robert Soren Joe.8xp/.83p - Joe Higashi from the King of Fighters (Kof) series (Hey, it's me!) * Andy.8xp/.83p - Andy Bogard from the Kof series * Geese.8xp/.83p - Geese Howard from the Kof series * Chizuru.8xp/.83p - Chizuru Kagura from the Kof series * Kyo.8xp/.83p - Kyo Kusanagi from the Kof series * Mai.8xp/.83p - Mai Shiranui from the Kof series * Mrbig.8xp/.83p - Mr. Big from the Kof series * Robert.8xp/.83p - Robert Garcia from the Kof series * Terry.8xp/.83p - Terry Bogard from the Kof series * Ryo.8xp/.83p - Ryo Sakazaki from the Kof series * Killabyt.8xp/.83p - Killabyte by Danny Rogers * Marc.8xp/.83p - MacGyver Alan Ryuuno Camien from TSC & NAMtS by Marc Ryan * Characters marked with an asterisk are required to play the tournament mode Game Modes ---------- Now that you have the game installed you are ready to play. Find the program in your shell of choice and run it. The title screen should appear. Press the 2nd key to continue to the main menu. The menu controls are fairly simple, use the arrow keys to make a selection and press 2nd to select it. The skulls displayed in the middle represent the difficulty. The more skulls, the harder the difficulty and the better your opponents become. A small note about the AI: The AI has the ability to learn. It will remember how you fight and adapt its tactics to best defeat you. Once you have chosen the difficulty you wish to play at, select fight and proceed to the mode selection screen. Here you use the arrow keys to scroll through the mode choices and the 2nd to select. If you cannot select a certain mode for some reason, you may not have enough character files to play it(tag team). The modes are, in order from top to bottom: Practice, Tournament, Tag Team. Practice matches you against a single random opponent in a best of three fight. At the end of the fight some statistics will be shown and you will be given a score. Tournament mode challenges you to beat several opponents selected in a random order in a slew of best of three matches. Please note that you cannot play a tournament unless you beat the one before it (Easy is available from the start, but you can't play medium until you beat easy). Beating the tournament mode may also unlock characters or other hidden features (one of which is a special "power up"). You can choose to save your progress after each of the matches. To save, simply press the Del key while on the You Win screen the game will save your progress and then exit so you may continue at a later time. Upon completing the tournament you will be treated (or forced to watch, depending on your mood) to the credits. They will be different each time so it shouldn't be too boring. After the credits are finished you may see another You Win screen with a new fighter on it. This means that you have unlocked a new character. Please note that if you unlock a character and don't have that file on your calculator the You Win screen will not be shown. Tag team mode is a little different. You choose three characters, then the computer chooses three characters. Your first character fights the computers first character. Whichever one wins gains a little health back and then fights the next character in the order. Play continues until all three characters have been defeated, may they be your's or the computer's. After you have selected the mode you must select your character (or characters if you chose tag team). Use the arrows to cycle through the characters. You can only view characters that you have unlocked. If you pause for a while on a character you can see how they fight. Basic Controls -------------- Menus: 2nd: Make selection Arrows: Move cursor to selection Clear: Return to the main menu from the mode or character select screen In-game: 2nd: Punch Mode: Kick Left and Right arrows: Move left and right Up: Jump Down: Crouch Del: Pause NOTE: There are a number of three move combos to perform but I'll leave it up to you to find them. Fight Basics ------------ There are a few general rules that govern the fights. When you are in a crouch, you cannot be hurt by a punch but you can by a kick. When you jump, you cannot change directions until you land. If you are crouching and get hurt, you will stand back up. Bugs ---- There is only one bug that I know of and it is extremely rare. Once in a great great while your character will go inside the other one. It won't cause a crash or anything nasty but it is mildly annoying. I have tried my best to correct it but I can't seem to locate the cause of it. This is mainly due to the fact that I can't recreate it very often. If you find any other bugs or manage to figure out the cause of then one I mentioned, please let me know (joef43065@yahoo.com).
